£400,000 for Yiewsley High Street

OVER £400,000 is to be spent giving the town centres of Yiewsley and West Drayton a much-needed facelift.

A more spacious High Street with better access for vehicles and pedestrians is aimed at making the place better for shoppers.

The project will span two years, and the budget for the first phase has just been signed off.

The improvements are a result of consultation with community groups, and are jointly funded by Hillingdon Council and Transport for London.

The money will be spent on new paving and trees in Yiewsley High Street, between the library and Aldi, and Station Road, West Drayton, near its junction with Swan Road.

At the same time improvements will take place to the lighting under the rail bridge, to increase both the daytime and night time lighting levels.

The scheme aims to bring a reduction in street furniture clutter, better access for buses, improvements at the two bridges in the town centre, better pedestrian crossings and a reduction in traffic congestion.

There are particular aims to reduce congestion between Falling Lane, Yiewsley, and Swan Road which tends to build up particularly heavily during rush hour periods.

Councillor Keith Burrows, cabinet member for planning and transportation said: "This is very good news for the people of Yiewsley and West Drayton who will soon have a high street to be really proud of.

"We have already made major improvements to Ruislip, Harefield, Northwood and Uxbridge town centres as part of our commitment to improve the look and feel of our main town centres."

The second phase of the project will be decided upon next year, and suggestions for the scheme are still be welcomed by the council.
