THIS is the final week for entries into the Uxbridge Gazette's eighth annual Local Heroes awards, which recognises ordinary people who deserve credit for doing good deeds.

The competition, held in association with Uxbridge College, acknowledges the hard work, dedication and courage shown by people who live or work in Hillingdon and have put others first, overcome adversity, or made an outstanding contribution to the community.

This week, Janice Andrews was nominated for her commitment towards Ruislip skate park, as well as many other projects in the area for young people and the elderly.

If you know someone who fits the bill, this is your last chance to nominate them and help them win up to £1,000!

The closing date is next Monday, December 14, and the judging panel will make their decision later next week.

The overall winner takes home an amazing £750, with £250 and a trophy awarded to the winner of each of the five categories, which include Community Champion, Outstanding Young Person, Star Carer, Courageous Citizen and Fabulous Fundraiser.

To nominate, see the form in this week's Uxbridge Gazette, or email the category and contact details for both the nominee and person who is nominating, along with a brief description of their good deed, to reporters Jack Griffith at jackgriffith@trinitysouth.co.uk or Dan Coombs at dancoombs@trinitysouth.co.uk

The categories are:

Outstanding Young Person: Anyone aged 16 or under who has made an outstanding achievement or impressive effort, supported others or enthusiastically taken part in sports or an event. Winner takes home £250, runners-up £50.

Star Carer: Someone who has selflessly looked after a friend, relative, neighbour, or others. Winner takes home £250, runners-up £50.

Community Champion: An individual, group or organisation which has helped or supported the community. Winner takes home £250, runners-up £50.

Courageous Citizen: Someone who has triumphed over adversity, achieved something against the odds, or shown courage or determination. Winner takes home £250, runners-up £50.

Fabulous Fundraiser: An individual, group, organisation or business which has raised money for a deserving cause. Winner takes home £250, runners-up £50.

The overall winner will be chosen from any of the above categories and will receive an additional £750.

*Please note that, under competition rules, staff from the Uxbridge Gazette and Leader series, and students and staff from Uxbridge College, cannot be nominated.

We'd like to hear from you.
