Yiewsley war memorial to be re-dedicated
MANY names of those who gallantly served the country in World War Two will finally be carved onto a memorial on Sunday for the first time.
After months of work and years of campaigning, a re-dedication ceremony is to take place at Yiewsley War Memorial this weekend.
The memorial in the churchyard at St Matthew's Church, High Street, Yiewsley, was created in 1921, but over the decades found itself in a dilapidated state, in need of repair.
After the announcement last year that the memorial would be restored, major refurbishing has been taking place.
The restoration has involved a thorough cleaning, re-carving of many first World War names, many of which had become illegible over the years.
The work has also seen the significant change in that those who perished in World War Two, will be remembered as their names have been enscripted on bronze plaques.
The memorial has also seen a new landscaping scheme introduced, and a new churchyard gate, kindly provided by the West Drayton British Legion.
As well as the Legion, the renovations have been a result of a partnership between Lodge Brother Funeral Directors, who paid for the cleaning, Hillingdon Council, and St Matthew's Church.
Reverend Richard Young added: "It has been particularly exciting that this long-needed project has been realised during St Matthew's 150th anniversary year."
The re-dedication ceremony will take place at the churchyard on Sunday (Oct 4) at 3.30pm, and will be attended by the Bishop of Willesden, reverend Pete Broadbent.
MP for Uxbridge and West Drayton, John Randall, is also scheduled to attend along with councillors, and all those wishing to witness the historic event are invited.
