PETITIONERS from Yiewsley have convinced Hillingdon Council to step up plans to tackle homelessness in the area.

Councillors met to discuss plans to open a winter shelter for rough sleepers after St Matthews Church expressed concerns over the number of homeless people in the area.

Last year Hillingdon Council funded a winter shelter which ran for six weeks and this year the shelter is being considered to be open for up to eight weeks.
A total of 12 homeless men were housed within the hostel last year, nine of whom were successfully rehoused into secure accommodation by the end of the project.

Petitioners at St Matthews, in Yiewsley High Street believe there should be a count of rough sleepers far more regularly than every three to five years, which is standard procedure, and good practice in boroughs where there are low numbers of rough sleepers.

The last street count took place in November 2007 with t10 people found, but in response to the concerns raised, another street count has been taking place over the last week in the borough.

The winter shelter will provide food and shelter across the cold winter months, and volunteers are needed to get involved with the project.

THE last chance to have your say on the future of Yiewsley Health Centre will take place on Thursday November 20.

It is the second of two public consultations which will help to shape the future of the centre after the first was held on Tuesday November 18.

The public meeting will take place between 6pm and 7pm in the Main Church Hall at Yiewsley Methodist Church, Fairfield Road, Yiewsley.

Senior Directors from Hillingdon PCT will attend both meetings and answer questions from the public.

A PET superstore is to be opened in Yiewsley.

Pets at Home in the Cowley Retail Park in High Street, Yiewsley, will open its doors on November 28.

The 7,820 sq ft store will create 15 jobs and provide a £367,000 investment in the town.

Manager, Nader Kairimi: "I'm delighted to be opening our new store in West Drayton, we'll be catering for all pets as well as wildlife and we welcome pets of all shapes and sizes to come shopping with their owners."

A SIX figure sum has been ear marked to develop a Yiewsley children's centre.

Up to £600,050 has been allocated to fund contractors for the centre at Yiewsley Baptist Church in Colham Avenue, Yiewsley.

The cash is part of a £5.4 million Sure Start grant from the Government to Hillingdon Council aimed at creating a children's centre in every community.

So far 12 centres have been designated for development across the borough with several more set to be announced.

Each centre provides a range of services including outreach and family support teams and health visitors.

A spokeswoman from Hillingdon Council said: "Children's centres aim to provide a range of services and activities to help improve the outcomes for all young children and their families, supporting parents in bringing up their children giving advice on family health and allowing the family to have access to adult education and employment opportunities."
Newly completed centres at Oak Farm in Hillingdon and Ballymore in Hayes are due to be opened in the next few months.
